City of Semmes Incorporation

The Semmes Community voted on August 17, 2010 by nearly a 3 to 1 margin to become Alabama’s 461st municipality. Mobile County Probate Court Judge Don Davis declared the City of Semmes Incorporated with a population of 2,897 on May 2, 2011 after an official census of the municipality was completed.

Semmes functions as a Class 8 municipality with a Mayor/Council form of government. A six member City Council comprised of the mayor and five council members, governs the City of Semmes and have been elected to serve four year terms. The mayor and city council’s duties and responsibilities include establishing effective policies, realistic goals, enacting legislation, adopting the city’s operating budget, and appropriating the funds necessary to provide efficient municipal services to the city’s residents, businesses, and visitors.

Only one person Judy Hale, filed with the probate Judge Davis to run for the office of Mayor in 2011, and, as such, was deemed elected without an election taking place. She and the first City Council members, Jerry Shirey, Mary Calhoun, David Baker, Phillip Dodd, and Teresa Bonner who also were unopposed were sworn in at the first City Council meeting on June 6, 2011.

CURRENT CITY OF SEMMES ADMINISTRATION
