Semmes Senior Center is an integral part of the community and is a busy hub for local senior adults to enjoy. It is a warm, welcoming place where they feel a sense of belonging and feeling like family. It provides them with opportunities for mental stimulation, physical fitness, socialization, fun games, and entertainment. Speakers and classes are scheduled regularly to present relevant information and promote awareness of nutrition, health issues, fraud protection, financial issues, current events, computer skills, and other items of interest such as gardening and genealogy. Special events that encourage participation and fellowship are scheduled often.
If you are a senior and 62 years old, you are invited to check out the Center and all it has to offer. It’s a great place to hang out! Come by and take a tour. The Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The membership fee is $40.00 a year.
The beautiful Center is located at 9635 Moffett Road. The building, constructed in 1951, was the home of the Blackwell Nursery family. It is a 4,000-square-foot facility located on four wooded acres.
The property was purchased by Mobile County in 2011. In line with Commissioner Connie Hudson’s vision, construction was begun to renovate the home for suitability as a senior center. The construction utilized County and Federal funding. The Center’s grand opening was held in April 2013. A partnership of Mobile County, the City of Semmes, and the Semmes Woman’s Club was formed to operate the Center initially.
In 2019, the County began construction of a modern 2,650-square-foot building behind the original home to accommodate the growth of the Center’s participants and activities. The Activity Building opened in 2021 and is a wonderful addition to the Center!
In 2021, the Blackwell Home was recognized as a historic landmark by the Alabama Historical Commission. In June 2022, the City of Semmes held a ceremony at the Senior Center to celebrate the placement and unveiling of a Historic Site Marker for the Blackwell House, now the Semmes Senior Center.
In 2023, the Center’s beautiful walking trail was constructed by Mobile County. It meanders through the property behind the buildings with exercise stations along its path. Another County project is underway on the property on the west side of the building. The current walking trail will be extended, and two pickleball courts and a shuffleboard court will be built. All should be completed in 2024.
The Center and property belong to Mobile County. The City of Semmes is now the managing entity for the Center and Mobile County manages a grant that funds the salaries of the Center’s staff.
