Construction of Semmes First Responder Safe Room was completed June 1, 2020. It is located behind the Semmes Public Safety Training Complex at 9010 Forest Street. The 2000 square foot facility will shelter up to 84 first responders and public safety personnel while withstanding wind speeds of 200 mph. The structure’s primary purpose is to provide the City of Semmes’ first responders (fire and public works personnel), Mayor and city leaders, law enforcement, EMS and utility providers a safe harbor during a catastrophic event such as a hurricane. The facility will ensure continuity of leadership while providing a reliable communications center necessary for the most effective/expedient response and recovery efforts.
Community Risk Reduction (CRR) is a strategic approach used by fire departments to identify and address risks within the community proactively. By combining education, enforcement, engineering, emergency response, and community engagement, CRR aims to reduce the likelihood and impact of emergencies. The goal is to create a safer environment by preventing incidents before they occur and ensuring the community is better prepared to respond when they do.
Fire Safety Education Programs
School Visits: Firefighters visit schools to teach children about fire safety, including how to stop, drop, and roll, and the importance of smoke alarms.
Public Workshops: Semmes Fire Rescue hosts workshops for adults on topics such as fire extinguisher use, home escape planning, and cooking safety.
Seasonal Campaigns: Educational campaigns are tailored to specific risks during certain times of the year, such as fire safety during the winter holiday season or wildfire prevention during dry months.
Home Safety Inspections
Voluntary Inspections: Firefighters visit homes to identify fire hazards and provide recommendations for reducing risks, such as clearing clutter, ensuring proper electrical safety, and safely storing flammable materials.
Wildfire Assessments: In wildfire-prone areas, assessments are conducted to recommend measures like creating defensible space around homes and properties.
Community CPR and First Aid Training
Training Courses: Semmes Fire Rescue offers CPR and first aid classes to the public, increasing the number of individuals who can respond to medical emergencies before professional help arrives.
AED (Automated External Defibrillator) Programs: AEDs are installed in public places, and community members are trained in their use.
Smoke Alarm Installation Programs
Free Distribution and Installation: Semmes Fire Rescue provides free smoke alarms and installation services, particularly in low-income or high-risk neighborhoods.
Battery Replacement Initiatives: Programs that remind or assist residents in replacing smoke alarm batteries regularly, often during daylight saving time changes.
Fire Code Enforcement
Building Inspections: Regular inspections of commercial, industrial, and multi-family residential buildings are conducted to ensure compliance with fire codes and regulations.
Permitting Processes: Semmes Fire Rescue collaborates with local government to review building plans and issue permits for new construction, ensuring fire safety measures are incorporated from the start.
Juvenile Fire Setter Programs
Intervention and Counseling: Programs are available to educate children and teenagers who have been involved in fire-setting behavior, providing them with counseling and resources to prevent future incidents.
Senior Safety Programs
Fall Prevention: Education is provided to seniors on how to prevent falls, a leading cause of injury in the elderly population, and how to safely evacuate during an emergency.
Cooking Safety: Guidance is offered on safe cooking practices, as seniors are often at higher risk for kitchen fires.

The smoke detector “give-away” program is designed for residents in the jurisdiction of the City of Semmes Fire and Rescue Department. Once Semmes Fire and Rescue is aware of a home without a smoke detector, they can install a battery operated smoke detector (or detectors) in the appropriate locations and in a professional manner. Please contact the City of Semmes Fire and Rescue Department at (251) 283-7060 for more information concerning this program or to schedule an appointment for the smoke detection installation in your home. Remember, these are battery powered detectors and not hard-wired detectors.
