Municipal Elections

Municipal elections for Mayor and the five-member City Council are managed and coordinated by the City Clerk’s office. For detailed information regarding qualifying for City Offices, voting records, absentee ballots, etc; call the City Clerk in City Hall at 251-649-8811.

County/State/National Elections

The City Clerk’s office does not administer county, state, or national elections. For information regarding these Election processes, please visit AlabamaVotes.gov.

Candidates for Municipal Elections

Individuals interested in running for a position on the City Council in an upcoming scheduled municipal election are advised to contact the City Clerk’s Office. Each candidate must stipulate by number (1-5) the Place for which she or he is a candidate. No person shall be a candidate for more than one place. A qualification fee of $25 (for City Council position) or $50 (for Mayor) must be paid to the City of Semmes at the time qualification papers are filed with the City Clerk.

Absentee Voting Requirements

A registered voter must meet one of the following requirements to apply for an absentee ballot:

  • The person will be out of the municipality on election day.
  • The person has any physical illness or infirmity which prevents his or her attendance at the polls, whether he or she is within or without the county on the day of the election.
  • The person works on a shift which has at least 10 hours which coincides with the hours the polls are open at his or her polling place.
  • The person is enrolled as a student at an educational institution located outside the county of his or her personal residence attendance at which prevents his or her attendance at the polls.
  • The person is a member of, or spouse or dependent of a member of, the armed forces of the United States or is similarly qualified to vote absentee pursuant to the Federal Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, 42 U.S.C. 1973 ff.
  • The person has been appointed as an election officer or named as a poll watcher at a polling place other than his or her regular polling place.

Applications

Absentee Voting applications for Municipal Elections only can be obtained at City Hall from the City Clerk. Absentee applications other than an application for an emergency absentee ballot, shall be returned in person to the City Clerk at City Hall or can be returned by U.S. mail. Multiple applications mailed in one envelope cannot be accepted.

Currently, there is one polling location for all municipal elections. It is:

The poll hours are from 7 a.m.- 7 p.m.
The City of Semmes is located in District 2 of Mobile County.

 To determine your polling location for all other elections, you may search by last name and county on AlabamaVotes.gov.

Voter Registration

All residents of Semmes are encouraged to check their voter registration to make sure it is current. Many people may have moved into our community recently, are first time voters, or their marital status may have changed since the last election, and they may have forgotten to update their voter registration.

Mobile County Registrations

The City of Semmes is situated in Mobile County. The Mobile County Board of Registrars number is (251) 574-8586 and their office hours are Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Residents may also visit their website at http://mobilecountyal.gov/government/voter to obtain more voter registration information.

Voter Identification

Act 2011-673 states that Alabama voters shall present a specific type of photo identification at the polls in order to vote. This law includes municipal elections. As taken from the Secretary of State’s website, the following forms of ID are acceptable:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Valid Non-Driver’s ID
  • Valid Alabama Photo Voter ID issued by the Secretary of State
  • Valid State issued ID issued by the State of Alabama or any other state, or the United States authorized by law to issue personal identification, provided that such identification card contains a photograph of the elector
  • Valid U.S passport
  • Valid Employee ID containing a photograph of the elector and issued by any branch, department, agency, or entity of the Federal Government, the State of Alabama, any County Government, Municipality, Board, Authority or other entity of this state.
  • Valid student or employee ID containing a photograph of the elector issued by a public or private college, university, in the State of Alabama (including postgraduate technical or professional schools).
  • Valid US Military ID card provided that such identification card contains a photograph of the elector.
  • Valid Tribal Identification card containing a photograph of the elector.
